vs Farmingdale Lady Riders, 9/29
The Elmont Rockers had faced the large and formidable Farmingdale Lady Riders before. The results: 2 losses over 2 seasons with 2 serious injuries to 2 key players. Those memories were erased today with a decisive 5-1 victory in an important early season game.

Both clubs came into the contest with a 2-0 record and a share of first place. The Lady Riders had not allowed a goal in the young season, and Elmont was trying to regain it's form following two inconsistent seasons in the U-12 bracket.

The Rockers hit the pitch aggressively and opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Elena, who dominated play on the left wing, hit Christine with a square pass to center. Christine's low drive, from 10 yards out, found the right side of the net.

The Rockers took good care of the ball and threatened several times from the left side, but missed several oppurtunities. Things got tense in the 18th minute when the Lady Riders' quick #9 sprung a long run down the right wing and found a teammate for a pretty, game-tying goal under the crossbar. But the Rockers would not be intimidated. Catey - playing with intense ferocity after stopping a hard struck ball with her face - put the team up for good in the 30th minute with a pretty, left-footed, one-timer off a great pass from Lauren, slashing through the defense from right to center. The half time score was 2-1, Rockers.

The second half opened with more solid, ball control play by the Rockers. Elena, now on right wing, and Mira on the left had great success pushing the ball up the sidelines. Rachel's tenacious play in the center earned her many quality touches and it seemed fitting that she should score the next goal, as she did in the 43rd minute when Elena's quick move through traffic drew the defense and left Rachel open near the left post. Rachel deftly slipped Elena's feed into the near side of the goal, and the Rockers took a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Riders weren't finished however. They mounted several dangerous counter-attacks that were only thwarted by the quick reflexes of the Elmont defense and goalkeeper. Zoe showed excellent, gutsy judgement in coming off her line to make several skillfull saves. All of her clearing punts and goal kicks were right on the money. Phoebe was an intimidating presence in mid-field, matching up against the large Farmingdale players with fearless determination, and winning the ball time and again. Lauren's lightning quickness prevented a few potentially dangerous quick breaks from fully developing. It must be said that Mira's second half play, on the left wing, was exceptional, creating many opportunities with a thrilling display of ball handling and passing skills. Drew and Alex showed cool composure on defense. Meghan put her body in front of streaking players and hazardous balls. The always dangerous Shelby, drew defenders to her as she passed the ball to her open teammates. Katherine created havoc among the opposition with her agressive, heady play. Hanna - cool, steady, and dangerous on set plays - was her usual calming presence. Has a striker ever gotten past Sara when she was the last player back? Even Adri - limited by injury to a sideline role - helped inspire her teammates with vocal encouragement and relentless, good cheer.

The Lady Riders simply couldn't break through. When Hanna corralled a low, Farmingdale goal kick (one of many the Rockers diverted to their advantage) in the 55th minute, and sent it back towards the opposition's end line, Elena was there to lift a defender's rebound under the crossbar from ten yards away - a very pretty goal. The Lady Riders were finished, but Elena wasn't. She scored again on a free kick from the right touch line in the 65th minute, on a blast off the goalkeeper's gloves that was THTH (Too Hot To Handle). Elena finished the day with two goals and two assists. The Rockers finished the day with a very satisfying 5-1 victory, an undefeated record, and sole posession of first place in early season divisional play.
